Louie came into my life in the spring of 2005. He was a Mini Schnauzer mix. White. The person I got him from gave me strict orders not to “humanize” him. I assured the man I understood a dog’s place in the home. He told me to crate him, not to give human food, train him to be alone for periods of time, and to teach him boundaries. I went home right away and was confident that I knew what I was doing. By night four, after many hours of no sleep and high-pitched crying and midnight snacks of bagels and peanut butter, I grabbed Louie and put him in bed with me and there he stayed happy and quiet night after night for 13 years.

The other night I set out on a quest. I had planned to show my students a film while I was at a conference Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that I don’t actually own the movie. After an exhaustive search of driving to or calling every store I could think of that sold movies, I found the movie at a Family Video in Elkhorn. On my drive home, I decided that my efforts definitely deserved a glass of wine. The bartender at Pitch thought I deserved a bottle of 2014 Brazin Old Vine Zinfandel, and I felt that she was spot on!
The best thing about this wine: Bold but accessible flavor
Available at: Pitch
By the glass: $10 / By the bottle $42
Pairs well with: Spicy food, red meat

Do you consider yourself an Old Soul? The Old soul doesn’t see the purpose of pursuing things that can be easily taken away from them. Old souls have little time and interest for the short-lived things in life, as they bring little meaning or long lasting fulfillment for them.
Available at: HyVee
By the bottle: $10.99
Pairs well with: Grilled Salmon and Spinach Salad with Peach Dressing.

Long Distance Ladies’ Night
Last night as I drank a bottle Petite Petit with my good friend in Dallas, I found myself wondering what we would do without technology. Even a distant friend seems much closer with just a smart phone, FaceTime, and a bottle of a favorite wine.
Available at: HyVee
By the bottle: $18.00
Pairs well with: BBQ, beef or pork tenderloin, dry or strong cheeses.
