Bogle * Phantom* 2013

bogle phantom-1332836466..jpg

Fall is definitely in the air today. I glanced out the window and saw my neighborhood dressed in bright reds and yellows with the gusty winds swirling the leaves that couldn’t hang on from their branches. The sky was mostly grey with periods of sunshine peeking through really turning the grey skies dark. What an eerie feeling. Summer is finally over. Nothing was really planned for my afternoon, so after some morning chores, I headed to the cellar to find something yummy to pour in my glass. It was a perfect day to try the Bogle Phantom red blend.

The best thing about this wine: very friendly on the palate
Available at: Corkscrew Wine and Cheese: $20
Pairs well with: fall afternoons, spaghetti with red sauce and eerie afternoons

A note on the fires in Napa and Sonoma

My recommendation today goes against the spirit of our blog, but I think the the cause is worthy. If you are a fan of Napa or Sonoma wines, or even if you aren’t, you’ve surely heard about the fires ravaging the area this week. It saddens me to hear of the damage to the area, which I got to see for the first time ever this year.

As I hear the areas affected by the fires, I think of all the places I visited that may be affected by this devastating natural disaster. And then I realized how truly selfish those thoughts are. While my wine drinking will certainly be affected by this, far more serious are the effects on the livelihood of all those who live and work in the area. Wine has a reputation for being for the wealthy, but those are far from the only people losing their homes, jobs, even lives.

Ruffino * Modus * 2013

After an unusually busy week with family, kids, house, work and weather that started off chilly & wet, I think about a getaway somewhere that is warm, beach related, and quiet. How I miss those days of being able to escape on a moment’s notice to indulge myself in some quality “me” time. I found that I had about an hour before the ruckus started in for the evening, so I uncorked the Ruffino Modus red blend.

The best thing about this wine: A tasty red blend
Available at: Corkscrew Wine and Cheese by special request
Pairs well with: aged cheeses including taleggio, pecorino and gouda.

75 Wine Company * Sauvignon Blanc * 2015

The Seventy-Five Wine Company was founded to honor all that transpired and to all that found inspiration that landmark year. 1975. The Seventy Five Wine Company revels in expressing California wine country’s sun, earth and abundance.  During the weekly Wednesday Flight tasting that Corkscrew Wine and Cheese offers at both their locations, I was able to taste 3 of the 75 Wine Company wines. The Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and ‘The Sum’ red blend. The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc is what stood out to me and caught my attention. Maybe it’s me just wanting to hold on to summertime just a bit longer. This wine represents the true essence of the grape and source. I got melon, peach and lemon on both the nose and palate. There was a hint of grass and it followed up with fresh fruit which left me wanting to grab a bottle to experience at home.

Cheers,

Mo

I picked this bottle up a few months ago after a bad day. I remember that I was feeling fiery and wanted to do something I don’t usually: buy a bottle with a name or label that spoke to my emotion. I ended up having a friend call me to get together, so the bottle got tucked away. It ended up being perfect for me to enjoy tonight, along with Will and Grace!

The best thing about this wine: convenient and a great value
Available at: Target
By the bottle: $9.99

Pairs well with: steaks on the grill, beef stew

St. Amant * The Bootleg Society ‘Speakeasy’ * 2014

This winery/wine maker caught my attention a couple of years ago when I was given a bottle of The 2013 ‘The Road Less Traveled’ Tempranillo to try and I fell in love from the first sip. Back then my reviews were usually “Eh” or “YUMMY!” Some still get these votes but today this gets a “YUMMY!!” and a reason why….

One of the thing I’ve always admired about the people in the wine industry is their generosity. This is not a universal truth, of course, but the fact is that most of the people I have had the pleasure of meeting are very happy to share their success, and their wine, if it means benefiting a worthy cause. And on the subjects of both generosity and worthy causes, it didn’t take long working in OPA for me to recognize that the Omaha Schools Foundation is an incredible asset to the 50K+ students in our district, and perhaps even more so, to the thousands of teachers who are so devoted to their success.

As a (relatively) young man with two kids, a mortgage, and enough student loans for two people, I sometimes lament my inability to cut checks to causes that I know are worthy of my support. That being said…
