Today, I began my fourth year of teaching. I spent a week preparing my classroom, hanging my decorations, and planning lessons and activities so we could hit the ground running in our 5 minute mini-classes today. After introductions, we did “would you rather” as an ice breaker. In that spirit, would you rather… force yourself to wake up really early or force yourself not to go to sleep before 5 pm? Hit your 10,000 steps while clocking 45 minutes of exercise at work before 3:30 or be unable to wake up from your definitely-not-a-nap when you get home? Suffice it to say that I am beat! Cooking was definitely not an option tonight, so I hit up a couple places in Dundee to get some dinner and a glass of wine. I ended up going for Krone, a sparkling rose, at Baela Rose.
The best thing about this wine: super fine bubbles and nice flavor

As summer is winding down, the days are getting shorter and we settle back into a more subdued routine, I find that I treasure the time I get to hide away in a wine shop and uncork something yummy. That time came on Saturday when I popped into Corkscrew Wine and Cheese in the Blackstone District and treated myself to a bowl of their delicious Creamy Mushroom soup. I decided to pair it with the Charisse Picpoul de Pinet Blanc.
The best thing about this wine: such a steal yet delicious
Available at: Corkscrew Wine and Cheese
By the glass: $8 / By the bottle: $15
Pairs well with: mushroom soup, patio days or any day

It’s been a long 2 weeks for us in the Hague household. If you have fur-babies you completely understand how they are a big part of your family and heart. Our boxer Brock stopped eating and lost 15 pounds in one week, so we took him in for some lab work. The vet wasn’t sure exactly, but according to his numbers it showed he either had the dreaded Lymphoma or Addison Disease. After hundreds of dollars and several meds later, we had him tested again today.
[Editor’s note: spoiler alert, he’s ok. I couldn’t take the suspense after poor Mo’s bad news last week]
The best thing about this wine: Jammy with a pleasurable silky finish
Available at: Vino Mas
By the bottle: $20.00
Pairs well with: Pepperoni Pizza

Our home consists of two working parents, a three-year-old, and two Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs. Making it through a typical week is a well-orchestrated routine, consisting of normal and usual habits, and the occasional exception to the standard plan. This week I made a day trip to Des Moines for work, which consisted of a long fourteen hour day. Rather than settle into the typical dinner routine we planned to invite our neighbor over to try a bottle of Pinot Gris we’ve never had before.
The best thing about this wine: so savory it must be shared
Available at: Spirit World
By the bottle: $24.99
Pairs well with: neighbors, conversation, and dinner
If you like light and dry white wines, try this wine.

I was getting my hair cut at a local salon one summer day when my stylist asked me if I’d like a glass of wine. “Why not?” I replied, figuring I deserved a glass of below-average Chardonnay for the price I was about to pay for my haircut.
Instead, I was served a lightly sparkling, slightly tart wine that tickled my tastebuds. What was it? I swirled and sniffed as I sat in my salon smock.
The best thing about this wine: It’s refreshing and citrusy
Available at: Trader Joe’s
By the bottle: $4.49
Pairs well with: Chicken, pasta salad, seafood, pork chops

It’s that time of year when you see a garage sale on every corner. I don’t care for for garage sales, let alone shopping! My mom and sister go crazy over garage sales and will spend hours driving around looking for them. I never understood!
